Hello everyone and welcome to the Electronic Music Alliance - September 2019 Newsletter!
Another month chalked off here in the EMAlien Mothership as we have been busy scanning planet Earth for talented and active electronic music producers! New members have been welcomed aboard and more music than ever is blasting out through our futuristic technological speakers and getting released on our community run label Electronic Alliance Records. We'll also be finding out a bit more about the "myth beyond the trousers" (not as dirty as it sounds) as we shine the spotlight on one of our EMA "Heroes" - Skaarl. But first, a quick look at how we're doing in the community. EMA Community
For the statisticians amongst us, let's have our usual look at the stats from the last month. We're over the moon to say, WE'VE DONE IT! Over 100 EMAliens have now boarded the Mothership since we launched in January 2019 with every one bringing something unique and awesome to our weekly playlists! Here's to the next 100!
We're always so very grateful to all the support from you EMAzing followers who listen in to our weekly playlists! Big shout as well to all our EMAliens on the Mothership making it such a fun and vibrant place to be! Definitely going from strength to strength with each month thanks to everyone's interaction!
Regular Playlists
We've had a little re-jig of our playlist schedules over the last month and as you know, we like keeping the music in these posts as "hot off the press" as possible by featuring tracks no older than 3 months from our members. To help rotate the latest beats, we've also added the Apple Music and Hearthis platforms to our rotation so there's no shortage of places where you can find our music! Here's a little reminder of our schedule:
Featured Playlist
A new part of the newsletter this month is our featured playlist where we highlight our pick of the playlists put out in the past month. This one is mega and it's from our "Hero" Skaarl, who shared it with us this past week. It provides a snapshot of what our community is all about and it's called EMAliens V on Spotify!
Electronic Alliance Records
Our community run label - Electronic Alliance Records - is showing no signs of stopping this month with 8 releases for you to wrap your EARs around (badum tschh). Make sure you follow us on our Beatport page to keep in the loop about the latest releases. Here's what happened this month:
Featured Artist - Skaarl
This has been on the cards for a while and we didn't manage to get a full interview with our trousered friend until this month! So now we managed to locate the missing trousers, we wanted to find out a little more about Skaarl. He has many names in our community from Don Skaarlioni, Agent Skaarl and Senor Trouser Man to name a few, which we all use interchangeably in our Discord! Let's hear from the man himself :)
Hey hey Skaarl! What's up! Thanks for joining me here - it's great to finally have a chance to find out a little more about you! So, the first question is, "Who is Skaarl?? Or Don Skaarlioni? Senor Trouser Man" Haha! Tell us a little bit about yourself, how you got involved with music? Influences, roots etc?
Gotta love the nicknames, that's what I get for being different and posting a pic of my feet instead of my face.
I'm just some bloke from St Austell, although I've been based in north east Nottinghamshire for a number of years now. I have existed under various different names over the years, starting to think I need to start creating some new alter egos…hmm. Musically, I've been a musician since I was a kid, started off playing percussion in a latin band (both hand and tuned percs), then moved onto playing double bass in a jazz band, then bass guitar. I used to DJ until a few years ago (but didn’t really get along with the digital stuff, I prefer vinyl and a set of 1210’s), this was my main source of income at one point too. As for creating electronic music, I’ve been doing this since the 90’s.
Well, you can always ask us if you need any more help with "alter egos" haha! Great to hear about your background though and all the different things you did. How has it shaped your sound now? Would you say you make any particular kind of music?
I don’t really follow one particular genre, I describe it as “whatever happens, happens”, one track will be some kind of tech house influenced track, the next will be some chilled out jazzy thing, the one after that I’ll have trouble finding a genre tag for.
I’m planning to resurrect one of my old projects under the name One Devious Monkey (as played on Miss Efemby’s show last week). This was something I started back in 2011 and never did anything with, it’s in a more glitchy style of electronic music, I love all that stuff, it’s wide open to experimentation which is another of my things. I also do some other stuff that’s more organic, kind of jazzy and latin stuff, since that’s in a style I like to play bass. More on that later though.
It's always good to have a bit of flexibility in what you make, the sky really is the limit. Maybe you can dress that devious monkey up in your trousers haha! I'm sure our listeners would LOVE to hear all these different styles and sounds - what have you got lined up release wise?
Loads, I have ‘Nomad’ with winkandwoo on the vox, that’s coming out on EAR on 5th Oct, followed by one of my other releases ‘Back To Basics’ on the 13th. I’m currently re-releasing all my back catalog, so have a few of those coming up, the next one ‘South Of The City’ was re-released on 29th Sept.
Also a few collabs I’ve done a remix of Miss Efemby’s Crazy Head, which she’s going to be releasing on EAR shortly, another one on The Turtle Project’s upcoming release, and there is another one I’m currently working on with Bufinjer. I love doing these collabs and remixes. I should have a couple of remixes of my tracks materialising at some point, Miss Efemby is working on two of them, and there was another I sent to Forces of Nature a little while back.
Wow, you're certainly keeping yourself busy mate! Looks like EAR is going to heaving in the next few months with all these releases! Awesome stuff! So outside of EMA and EAR, where can people find you?
If it’s Friday, usually in the pub!
Ahh wait, you meant online right? You can find me on any of the links below, there's probably some I've forgotten!
Haha! Plenty of options then for people to find you if they can't catch you down the local! And finally, the big question, how did you hear about or get involved with EMA/EAR?
I was chatting to that Nicky Havey bloke when they were just starting it up and said it sounding like an interesting idea, then the next thing I got an invite to the group on the day EMA started (I had known the founders for a while before that to be fair).
EMA is a great group, always something happening in the discord, good supportive bunch of people to hang out with too…just watch out for that DJ Overlord!
Haha, yea I know that Nicky Havey bloke! Well, we're very grateful you joined us since day 1 and thanks for being such a supportive part of the EMAlien Mothership! You can listen to Skaarl's beats over on his Spotify profile below - enjoy!
We hope you have enjoyed this month’s newsletter, let us know in the comments below and catch you soon for the next one!
Yours EMA (Bufinjer, DaveyHub & Nicky Havey)
